2 Parts in a folio volume. 227x155 mm. Full tan leather binding, rules frames on the covers with gilt fleurons at the corners, ribbed spine with gilt fleurons in the sections. Leaves 264, [30]. Elaborate historiated woodcut title border incorporating Giolito's phoenix device, section-title for second part with woodcut imprint frame and woodcut medallion portrait of Ariosto on verso, 46 woodcuts (one at the head of each canto), historiated woodcut initials, woodcut variant of Giolito's phoenix device at the end. Italic and Roman types. Good condition.
Rare and important illustrated edition, by Lodovico Dolce. The illustrations in this edition of Orlando Furioso are printed from woodblocks protected by a privilege obtained by Giolito from the Venetian Senate in 1541. L. Dolce's Exhibition has its own Titlepage, with Printer's device. The work is dedicated by the printer to Henri de Valois, dauphin of France, who married Catherine de' Medici in 1533. The original dedication by the publisher to Henri de Valois, dauphin of France, who had married Catherine de' Medici in 1533, is reprinted.
