This poster urges the public to subscribe in the first 'Emprunt de la Defense Nationale' [National Defense Loan]. This French war loan poster features an image of a soldier heading off to war, waving his family farewell. In the foreground his wife holds their youngest child and stands with their other two children. The message below translates as: 'Don't forget to subscribe. for Victory! and his return!". 1915 was the first year that France established a war loan program to assist in paying for the conflict. Francisque Poulbot (1879-1946) was a French poster designer, draughtsman, and illustrator, known for his charming depictions of children and childhood. His prolific output of patriotic posters and postcards during World War One led to him being held under house arrest during the German occupation during World War Two.
