In 1954, Formula 1 single-seaters returned to Pau. This year saw the addition of three official Maseratis to counter their Ferrari rivals. Two private Ferraris were also entered, as well as
four Gordinis driven by a French trio of Jean Behra, Elie Bayol and Eugène Martin, joined by Belgian André Pilette. While two of the factory Ferraris had to retire, the third,
driven by Maurice Trintignant, was in the lead at the halfway mark. His pursuer, Jean Behra, on a Gordini, made up for lost time, smashed the lap record several times, and won a remarkable duel with his compatriot in the closing stages.
with his compatriot in the final laps, then won the Grand Prix by just a few meters over the Ferrari. It was the first victory for a French manufacturer since
1938.
