Marcel DAMBOISE (1903-1992) Medallion of Albert Camus, 1961 Workshop plaster with patina Signed: Damboise Inscription (on the rim, in relief): ALBERT CAMUS 1913 1960 D. 45cm Inv. MD-S-031G-00i Provenance: Artist's studio, by descent Very poor condition The two artists met in Algiers in 1934, at an exhibition at the Villa Abd-el-Tif: Damboise, aged 31, was exhibiting there as a boarder; Camus, aged 21, was there as an art critic for a newspaper. A friendship developed between them, fueled by a love of the Greeks. This friendship continued until Camus's fatal accident in 1960. After Camus's death, Damboise created medallions and a bust to celebrate his memory. One of the medallions, in stone, adorns a monument to Camus erected in Villeblin in the Yonne, the commune where his sudden death occurred.
