BREGUET Subscription No. 485 with 18K yellow gold case, made for the Marquis of Bajamar c. 1799.
Single-hand clock with white enamel dial, Arabic numerals and 5-minute divisions. Secret signature below 12 o'clock. 61 mm 18K yellow gold case with guilloche decoration and monogram in the center. 36 hour power reserve, ruby cylinder escapement. Movement 25", signed Breguet, smooth brass three-arm balance wheel, with parachute on the upper pivot. In running condition.
The chatelaine has a marquis crown and initials on the back.
Note : Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823) devised the "subscription" watch in 1794. It was one of many "inventions" resulting from his period of forced exile in Switzerland during the French Revolution. The concept was simple and brilliant: to offer. his clients a watch that was paid a quarter in advance and the rest once finished.
Marquis of Bajamar is a Spanish noble title created by King Charles IV in 1791 in favor of Antonio de Porlier y Sopranis, Magistrate of the Council of the Indies, state councilor, Minister of the Indies and of Grace and Justice, historian and academic.
