PIETRO FRECCIA (Italy,1814-1856). "Rabbit", 1840. Marble Signed, located and dated. Measurements: 25 x 27 x 23 cm. During the nineteenth and twentieth century animal-themed sculpture will finally reach a status of its own, within the context of romantic sculpture. Seeking to break away from the classical sculptural ideal, many artists saw in the animal theme a new way of expression, linked to the emotional and irrational nature, in a purely romantic sense. Pietro Freccia was an Italian sculptor especially dedicated to marble carving, but his career was tragically interrupted at the age of thirty-two by an accidental fall from a scaffold on which he was working to complete the well-known Monument to Christopher Columbus, located in Piazza Acquaverde in Genoa. It was 1854; after two years, due to the serious injuries suffered, he died.
