China, second half of the 19th century,
Twelve-leaf folding screen in Coromandel lacquer, decorated on both sides in polychrome on a light-brown ground, with palace scenes and architectural views animated by figures, the perimeter decorated with motifs of movable objects, the other side depicting figures in gardens, the side panels decorated with dragons facing each other, fantastical animals in the lower part complete the ornamentation.
N.B. The screen features a flag above a house bearing the effigy of the army chief during the war and calligraphic inscriptions "Fenyang Shimei", Fengyang being the name of a city in Shanxi province and "shimei" meaning "all generations are beautiful".
