Composition circa 1980 Gouache on paper signed 26 x 34 cm Condition report: Framed Born in Blida (Algeria) in 1910, Maria Manton is a non-figurative artist of the Nouvelle École de Paris. From 1948, she exhibited as part of a group at the Galerie Colette Allendy, then at Lydia Conti, where her works rubbed shoulders with those of Hans Hartung, Gérard Schneider, Pierre Soulages...
In 1961, she became general secretary of the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, for which she remained actively involved until her death in 2003.
Her works are held by the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Musée National des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, the National Museum in Budapest, the Musée de Gajac in Villeneuve-sur-Lot...
More recently, some of her paintings were exhibited at the Musée Soulages as part of the "Femmes années 50. Au fil de l'abstraction, peinture et sculpture." (December 2019 - October 2020).
