Jim-Eugène Sévellec was appointed painter of the navy in 1936. This gouache was acquired by a Landerne merchant directly from the artist during his exile in the city on the banks of the Elorn, the Germans having requisitioned the painter's apartment on their arrival in Brest. Family legend has it that shortly after selling it, Sévellec, overcome with remorse, wanted to buy it back from his client. But the client refused.
