Alphonse de LAMARTINE
(1790-1864), writer.
Autograph letter signed, December 1, 1856, to a subscriber to his Cours familier de littérature, whom he asked to re-subscribe for 1857.
"My subscribers are not a public for me, they are a family of friends. I am aware that personal benevolence has played a greater part than literary curiosity in your subscription. I'm not ashamed of it, I'm proud of it. I prefer cordiality to glory. If the desire to contribute usefully to my work was indeed a major factor in your 1856 subscription, I dare to ask you frankly and personally to continue it for 1857".
