Torre di Garofoli [today Torre Garofoli between Alexandria and Tortone, 9 km from Marengo], 26 prairial an VIII [June 15 1800]. 3/4 p. in-4, copper-engraved header "Bonaparte Ier consul de la République" illustrated with the effigy of the Republic, with crossed-out Paris address. LETTER WRITTEN THE DAY AFTER THE BATTLE OF MARENGO, WHERE GENERAL DESAIX WAS KILLED IN ACTION. "The news from the army... is very good. I shall soon be in Paris. I cannot tell you any more: I am in the deepest pain the death of the man I loved and esteemed most. I send you my affectionate greetings...". Letter written under the dictation of his secretary Louis-Antoine Fauvelet de Bourrienne, under whose name would be published famous memoirs.
