Benjamin Eugène FICHEL (1826-1895) Napoleon in his study Oil on panel signed and dated lower left "E.Fichel 1864 28.5 x 21.3 cm Gilded and molded wood frame. Related work: Jacques Louis David, Napoleon in his study at the Tuileries History: This painting may have come from the collection of Princess Mathilde. In 1865, at the annual exhibition of the Cercle de l'Union Artistique, Fichel presented three Napoleonic paintings, including Napoléon dans son cabinet de travail, which could be our painting. These works were noticed by the press, notably by the great critic Louis Auvray, who wrote: "M. Meissonier's rival, M. Fichel, has become a true history painter. His color is less brilliant than that of the head of the school of microscopic painting, but it is more severe, more solid, qualities that suit the three subjects he has treated with talent: Mme de Beauharnais' first visit to General Bonaparte; Napoleon dictating orders, and Napoleon in his study. The latter is now in the salons of H.I.H. Princess Mathilde, to whom it belongs. - Auvray Louis, Revue artistique et littéraire, aux bureaux de la Revue, Paris, 1865
