INDIA, late 19th - early 20th century: Young women bathing Polychrome pigments and gold on paper 16.5 x 22 cm framed This miniature depicts a night scene with a group of eleven young women at a watering hole, near a cliff in the forest, washing themselves. They are dressed in transparent veils and colorful saris finely embellished with gold. These women are probably the Gopis, consorts and devotees of Krishna. This late but fine miniature repeats a number of clichés from the Mughal tradition. In particular, the theme of the Gopis' bath can be found in many Mughal paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries.
