A JAPANESE BLACK LACQUER SUZURI’BAKO, 19TH CENTURY Rectangular black lacquer suzuri'bako 硯箱 (writing box) with a well-fitted lid with rounded corners. The lid is decorated with gold hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) of a swirling flock of chidori 千鳥 (plover), set on a nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer) substrate. This design continuous on the interior of the box as well. The interior of the box with a removable tray with a raised edge, and a utensil tray featured with an inkstone 硯 (suzuri) and a waterdropper 水滴 (suiteki). The metal waterdropper in shaped as two peaches with a crescent moon on top. Size: Height 3.2 cm, Width 19.8 cm, Depth 17.7 cm. Period: Late Edo period / Early Meji period (19th century) The box is in a good condition with some general imperfections.
