A JAPANESE SUZURIBAKO BY SHÔNENDÔ
Round black lacquered inkstone box or writing box 硯箱 (suzuribako) made from thin bamboo segments. The lid of the box looks like the head of a drum. The edges decorated with black lacquer flowers of which the center inlaid with a small piece of mother-of-pearl 羅円 (raden).
The inside with gold lacquer with a design of plovers千鳥 (chidori) in red.
With a rectangular gold-rimmed ink-stone and a marked silver water-dropper 水滴 (suiteki) in the shape of a circular sail.
The suzuribako is in a good condition with some traces of age, wear and old reparations. The reparations are with kintsugi 金継ぎ (golden joinery) and reinforced by silver clamps. Honoring the philosophy, treating breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.
Including original signed and sealed wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box). Signed by the artist Shônendô.
Height 2.9 cm, Diameter 19.9 cm.
