AN INDIAN WOODEN QIBLA INDICATOR, 19TH CENTURY
A Indian lacquer Qibla indicator and sundial of circular form, painted in black with degrees, small cartouches enclosing the important cities in the region, beside each city is an indication if its 'qibla' [i.e. orientation of Mecca], thus offering an essential aid to a Muslim traveler within this region. The sides with cartouches enclosing Quran verses on a polychrome floral painted ground.
