Born into an upper-middle-class family of English origin who had settled in Paris at the end of the 18th century, Madeleine Smith was a pupil of Jean-Jacques Henner in 1887, and exhibited regularly at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français from 1889 until her death.
Wife of the historian Pierre Champion (1880-1942), Madeleine Smith was particularly connected to the literary milieu of her time through her uncle, the collector Auguste Lesouëf, and her father-in-law, the bookseller Honoré Champion.
