Michelangelo Maestri 1741 Roma-1812 Roma
Marsyas challenges Apollo Heterogeneous collection of forty gouaches, remarkable for their quality of execution and size, divided into twenty-two sheets, having as their main theme the Greek deities Apollo and Dionysius, along with depictions of Maenads and Muses. Both sons of Zeus, Apollo and Dionysus are here placed in connection with each other as deities presiding over the art of music and poetry, the former, and the art of comedy and tragedy, the latter. Arts all represented by the Muses, also present in the collection. The best production of Michelangelo Maestri, a painter and draughtsman of the neoclassical age, is almost exclusively inspired by ancient paintings, with mythological subjects, found in the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii, such as the figures and episodes illustrated in these tempera paintings.
