Pl. 10 for Ladies and Gentlemen portfolio. 1975. Silkscreen in color. [730 x 1110]. Feldman-Schellmann II.137. Very fine, fresh proof on strong Arches vellum, numbered "83/125", signed, dated "75" and annotated "@AWE" in pencil at foot verso. @AWE" in pencil on verso. All margins. L. Anselmino ed., Milan.
This emblematic suite of serigraphs depicts the artist's beloved world of drag queens and transvestites. Milanese publisher Luciano Anselmino suggested the theme to the artist. Bob Colacello, editor-in-chief of Interview magazine founded by Warhol, artist Ronnie Cutrone and actor Cory Tippin recruited the African-American and Hispanic models at The Gilded Grape nightclub in Greenwich Village. For fifty dollars an hour, the models came to the Factory to pose for Warhol, who took photographic portraits of them with his Polaroid. These portraits served as the basis for his series. It was first exhibited at Ferrara's Palazzo dei Diamanti from October 26 to December 8, 1975.
