India General Service Medal 1895, with two clasps: ‘Punjab Frontier 97-98’ and ‘Tirah 1897-98’. Named to: Asst Surgeon A V Yeates ISM Dept’ Assistant Surgeon A V Eates, Indian Subordinate Medical Department. Later Lieutenant, Senior Assistant Surgeon, Indian Medical Services. Seniority 02/07/1918. (FWR - Army List 1922). Referred to as British Eates was also awarded the Army LSGC GVR (1st Class Asst Surg A V Yeates IMSD). The grade of Assistant Surgeon held the equivalent rank of Warrant Officer. Military
Assistant Surgeons (formerly apothecary) were recruited from country-born Europeans and Euasians only, due to their role in relation to British soldiers. Note also that members of the ISM Department with the rank of warrant officer or above are recorded in the Indian Army lists.
