Olympic Games/ summer, 1920/ Antwerp/
Joseph Witterwulghe (1883-1967)
Bronze plaque
40 x 23 cm
It was in Antwerp that fencer Victor Boin took his first oath, and this bronze plaque by J.Witterwulghe was probably inspired by this first one... Left hand raised, the ancient athlete takes his oath... Laurels on his forehead, palm in his right hand, he is imposing. This plaque was still in use in 1936, as evidenced on the reverse by the words: ASCIB, champt Division 1, 1936. Perhaps soccer? 40X23. Joseph Witterwulghe (1883-1967) was a renowned Belgian artist, author of numerous sculptures and monuments, both funerary and otherwise.
