Speech on behalf of the Executive Directory to welcome the two new Directors, Merlin de Douai and François de Neufchâteau, appointed to replace Barthélemy and Carnot, dismissed following the coup d'état of 18 fructidor (September 4, 1797). ... "they are finally past those days of anguish when mistrust and dissension reigned in this chamber [...] each of us energetically wants the republic [...] each of us finally has no other ambition than to see France internally free and tranquil, and externally great and honored".Referring to the recent events leading up to 18 fructidor, he declares: "May all republicans rally together, and may nuances of opinion no longer make them the plaything of aristocracy and fanaticism". Terrorism must be fought. The consolidation of the republic lies in respect for the constitution and "in the principles of true patriots, those who combine great vigor of character with great wisdom in their conduct, a boundless devotion to liberty and an ardent thirst for justice"...Etc.
