From the end of the 19th century to the turn of the 20th, Antoine GIMELLO was the official painter for the city of Nice. He painted portraits of Nice's former mayors, including Alfred BORRIGLIONE (1841-1902), to adorn the walls of the mayor's office. He also made a name for himself with his portraits of the haute bourgeoisie, the Assumption fresco in the Guillaumes church and the decor for the Institut Pauliani, as well as his candid scenes of military and official life. The work presented here is a magnificent example of the latter.
