BUDDHA STATUE - Imposing Buddha statue in Vitarka Mudra - Metal and bronze -
Buddha statues are often depicted with their hands in various ritual postures. These hand gestures and postures are commonly known as Mudras.
Vitarka mudra is a ritual hand gesture used in yoga, Buddhism and Hinduism. The word Vitarka comes from Sanskrit and means "reasoning" and "discussion", and Mudra represents "closing" or "sealing".
Vitarka mudra is also known as the "debate gesture" or "discussion mudra".
To perform this gesture, the tip of the index finger and thumb of the right hand should touch, while the other fingers extend skywards. The palm is turned outwards, away from the body.
In this version of Vitarka mudra, the left hand rests palm-up on the knees.
Vitarka Mudra is the mudra or gesture that represents the Buddha's discussion and transmission of his teachings.
In the world of spirituality and meditation, mudras are much more than symbolic gestures set in stone or meditation. They are a gateway to the depths of Buddhist philosophy.
This superb statue of Buddha, illuminated by the gesture of Vitarka Mudra, is an invitation to wisdom, inner peace, love and compassion.
