"Creating a painting is, for me, like living in this world as you mean it; a world where you have your own mountains, your own rivers, your own sky, your own color. My images are there, on the canvas, and there's nothing beyond the confines of the frame."
What strikes you at first glance in Akhilesh VARMA's works are the repetitive patterns, entwined throughout the space of his large formats. The result is visually contemporary, modern and decorative. But the motivation behind the principle of repetition, which gives rhythm to his paintings, is of the order of ritual prayer (jap) rather than repetition (rat).
In this work, diverse, quasi-organic, almost mystical forms accumulate on a grid of squares. Geometric regularity, reminiscent of Raza, and meandering forms combine on the canvas to create Varma AKHILESH's own language.
