Maurice BERANGER (1954-) Vanities Oil on canvas 146 x 88 cm "I diverted Caravaggio's work "The Fortune Teller" because the central character represents, in my eyes, an excellent example of vanity. The passage of time over everything: youth, beauty, knowledge, power and pleasure. The majestic beauty of this seventeenth-century gentleman, proud and sure of his appearance, the refinement of his costume, contrasted with the time that will degrade his face back to nothingness." Maurice Béranger was born in Marseille on June 16, 1954. He studied at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, then at the Beaux-Arts in Marseille (engraving and painting). He became an illustrator for publishing houses (Larousse, Hachette and Dargaud) and advertising agencies (Perrier campaign, Nestle, Jean-Paul Gaultier). He lives and works in Nice and regularly exhibits his work in Paris, Santa Fe (USA) and Monaco.
