Jean CASSARINI (1910-2005) The oil lamp Oil on canvas Signed upper left 62 x 81 cm A student at the Arts Décoratifs de Nice, Jean Cassarini was a multi-faceted artist: painter, theater decorator, interior designer, co-founder of the Union Méditerranéenne pour l'Art Moderne (U.M.A.M.) with his friends Matisse and Bonnard... His stylistic sources are to be found in many of his predecessors, including Picasso, La Fresnaye and other purist contemporaries. His painting followed a path that took him from Cézannism in the early 30s, to a surrealistic imagery at the end of the same years and until 1950, in an exceptionally non-figurative form. From 1946, he returned to reality and treated it in a postcubist style, with smooth or jagged edges and packed colors. At the end of the '60s, he adopted a very different style: bright, almost dazzling colors, reds, blues, whites, greens, applied exclusively to figures, simplified, stylized, geometrized, with astonished eyes.
