Heinrich Neufang (Saarbrücken 1897 - 1956 Munich), ,Portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe after the painting by Joseph Karl Stieler (1781-1858) from 1828, today in the Neue Pinakothek Munich, oil on canvas, signed top right "cop. H. Neufang", 76 x 62 cm, Stieler created the portrait of Goethe on behalf of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, in his right hand the poet is holding a sheet of paper on which the last lines of a poem written by Ludwig I can be read. With Ludwig's poem in his hands, Goethe pays his respects to the Bavarian king and his poetry, while other contemporaries were less reserved in their criticism and mockery of Ludwig's often clumsy verses, minor scratches to the paint in the background, in a narrow silver frame, overall size: 78 x 64 cm.
