Victor VASARELY (1906-1997). Folklore planétaire - 1985. Original collage of cut and colored papers on cardboard. Signed lower right. Signed, dated and titled on the back. 50 x 50 cm. Certificate from Monsieur Pierre Vasarely dated April 24, 2023. Note: In 1964, Vasarely came up with the concept of "permutational" art, "all the products of methodical combinations of simple elements whose variety is limited, made according to a rule of assembly that the artist gives himself a priori". His logic is close to that of computer science. Circles and squares cut from thick paper interlock or intersect. This technique is reminiscent of Matisse's papiers découpés. Color bursts forth in the "Folklore Planétaire" works. The plastic unit is "composed of two geometric elements that fit into each other, combine and interchange". With these bicolored units, in powerful or contrasting tones, the visual artist invents his Plastic Alphabet, which concretizes an idea dating back to the beginning of the century among abstract artists, that of identifying a method enabling the creation of a universal language understandable by all.
