Norman Bluhm (1921-1999) Guitare à la Chaise Cassée 1951 Oil on canvas signed and dated upper left 91.5 x 60 cm Provenance: > Private collection, Paris "The 1950s and 1960s gave birth to a powerful new generation of abstract expressionists. It included artists such as Norman Bluhm, John Chamberlain, Al Leslie, Joan Mitchell and Mark Di Suvero, who approached the style with a deep commitment to taking it to the next level. A sophisticated and sympathetic understanding of their European cultural roots and a greater emphasis on the basics - composition, drawing, color, surface quality and structure - distinguish their approach. "(James Harithas) Norman Bluhm belongs to the second generation of Abstract Expressionist painters in America, but his style remains unique and distinctive. He first studied architecture at the Armor Institute of Technology. His experience as a pilot during the Second World War also had a significant influence on his art, giving him a particular understanding of space and a sense of speed perceptible in the dynamics of his works. After the war, Bluhm continued his studies at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts, then moved to Paris in 1947, where he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1956, he moved to New York and exhibited in prestigious galleries (Leo Castelli and Martha Jackson in Manhattan; Galerie Stadler in Paris). (MLD)
