Guere Wobe/Wé mask, Ivory Coast
Wood with brown patina, pigments,
H. 27 cm
A mask with the powerful volumes characteristic of Guere Wobe production. The protruding bulbous eyes are slit on either side of a broad nose, barely separated from the mouth with its blunt tongue. A second, soberly slit gaze is formed beneath the visored forehead, framed by horns. Vivid polychrome highlights have survived. Attachment holes on the thick wall.
While masks adorned with small bells are often described as "singing", it is more difficult, in the absence of details at the time of collection, to attribute a precise function to this type of Guere Wobe mask.
