IVORY COAST
Baoule statue
Female statue standing on legs firmly planted in the ground, bust blunt in the umbilical region, breasts small. The soft face is detailed with a half-moon gaze under supple arches, the nose straight and small, the delicate mouth half-open and enhanced with white pigments. The particularly meticulous headdress is composed of intricate buns and braids. Scarification marks on the back and nape of the neck. A small cotton loincloth held in place by a beaded tie has survived.
A fine example of this type
Wood with brown patina, old black pigments, cotton, seed beads
H. 43 cm.
Accidents, major cracks (body, head and feet), missing patina, holes in loincloth.
