Early 17th-century Flemish school, entourage of Cornelis Galle (Antwerp 1576-1650)
Two emblems :
- a cherub enthralled by the flame of an oil lamp on an architectural pedestal
- an angel lighting a fire with a magnifying glass
Oils on panels, one pair, mounted on panels supported by a ring
8.2 x 20 cm.
On the back of each panel, handwritten annotations in brown ink, probably dating from the late 17th century: Cornelius Galle
To be compared with the many emblems Galle supplied for the book by Jean Bolland (1596-1665) commemorating the centenary of the apostolic activity of the Society of Jesus in Flanders: "Imago primi saeculi societatis Jesu a provincia Flandro-Belgica ejusdem societatis representata" (Antwerp, Moret-Plantin, 1640).
