Évariste-Vital LUMINAIS
(Nantes 1821-1896 Paris)
Renaissance wild boar hunting scene
Oil on canvas (original Beugniet canvas)
Signed lower left
54.5 x 65 cm.
Presented in an opulent Louis XV-style gilded and carved wood frame.
A fine example of the art of Luminais, a pupil of Cogniet, who subtly combines landscape and historical scenes, borrowing from both Barbizon and Delacroix. A work similar in theme and mood, "Scène de chasse au chien sauvage au temps des mérovingiens" (59x 85 cm, Dahesh Museum of Art, DM735), is in New York.
