BOCCACCIO (1313-1375). Il Decameron. Venice: Angelieri, 1594.
A richly annotated copy of Boccaccio's Decameron in a contemporary hand, featuring philological observations and variations on the printed edition edited by Leonardo Salviati. Salviati made numerous changes to the text to avoid the censorship of the papal government, which had placed the Decameron on the index.
4to, (203 x 143mm). Printer's device to title page, engraved initials (restoration to title page, some spotting and light browning). Bound in twentieth-century vellum. Provenance: numerous marginal and interlinear annotations correcting the printed version, manuscript letter 'alle gentili e valorose donne' by Nicolo Delfino to title-page verso; Ex bibliotheca Balthassaris de Carratis, ex libris (Baldassarre Carrati, 1735-1812); Felix Schuster Bart (1854-1936), ex libris (both transferred from earlier binding).
