PICO DELLA MIRANDOLA, Giovanni Francesco (1469-1533). De morte Christi. De studio divinae et
humanae philosophiae. Bologna: Benedictus Hectoris, July 20, 1497.
First edition of this philosophical and theological treatise dedicated to Savonarola in which the author reflects on man's relationship with the divine. It is also curiously one of the first works in which the writer contemplates the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, one of the first testimonies to the gradual shift in awareness of the significance of the discovery.
4to, (200 x 145mm), ff. 72 (lower corner of a-a2 reconstructed, loss of text to lower margin of a3-a6, recomposed, 3 small holes to upper inner margin of first few leaves gradually disappearing and not touching text, the occasional small spot and other minor repairs). Twentieth-century binding skillfully rebacked with earlier materials in 18th-century style, in full vellum, gilt-title piece to spine, watermarked endpapers. (1)
