EUCLID (4th century BC). De gli elementi d'Euclide libri quindici. Con gli scholii antichi. Urbino: Frisolino, 1575. First Italian edition of Euclid edited by Federico Commandino (1509-1575) who had originally translated the text of the Greek mathematician into Latin. From an editorial point of view, the work is based on Franceschini's Latin edition in Pesaro (1572) of which the same typographic characters, initials and diagrams are used. 4to, (290 x 203mm). Numerous geometric illustrations in the text, engraved initials and headpieces (light spotting, occasional slight dampstaining, small wormholes to last three leaves). 18th-century half-calf binding with marbled boards, title gilt (chipping on spine and flaws at joints). Provenance: 18th-century stamp to title-page of the Convent of Santa Maria dei Servi in Bologna, whose library was dispersed after the Napoleonic army turned the complex into barracks in 1797. (1)
