A beautiful collection of plates from Saverio Manetti's monumental ' Natural History of Birds' published between 1771-1776 in five volumes containing 600 hand-watercolored plates. The author was an Italian physician and botanist known for his ornithological drawings. From 1749 to 1782 he was director of the Botanical Garden in Florence, and it was during his mandate that the work was commissioned by Maria Luisa, Grand Duchess of Tuscany. Linnaeus named the plant genus Manettia in his honor.
Folio, (455 x 350 mm). 19 plates with contemporary hand-colouring, numbers: 319, 329, 372, 373, 375, 380, 392, 394, 397, 399, 407, 409, 412, 435, 440, 464, 468, 476, 477 (sporadic spotting, otherwise in good condition, one plate trimmed close and mounted on modern card). (1)
