The National Order of the Legion of Honor was created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. The motto of the order is Honneur et Patrie ("Honor and Fatherland"); its headquarters is the Palace of the Legion of Honor, next to the Musée d'Orsay, on the left bank of the Seine, in Paris. It is the highest French order of merit, both military and civilian.
