Püttner, W. - Walter Püttner, 1872 Leipzig - 1953 Schloss Maxlrain near Bad Aibling, "Selbstbildnis mit Strohhut", oil/canvas, characterful bust portrait of the painter in slightly turned view, in front of a green, wooded background, broad, impasto brushstroke, typical painting style of the Scholle members, signed and dated (19)10 lower left, various numberings on the reverse, minimally wavy canvas, loss of color in two places in the picture, approx. 33.5x40.5cm, frame damaged ca. 46x52cm. Püttner studied in Munich under Ludwig von Herterich (1856-1932), Ludwig von Löfftz (1845-1910) and Paul Höcker (1854-1910), he was a co-founder of the artists' cooperative "Die Scholle" (1899) and the Neue Münchner Sezession and a member of the "Jugend", the motifs of his paintings were city views, portraits (including self-portraits), still lifes and interiors, the basic harmony of the composition is characteristic of his works, This is why he was described by artist friends as a "mathematician of painting", he was one of the pioneers of modernism, but his success waned with the emergence of the Blaue Reiter and he was almost forgotten due to his simple form of expression and limited motifs, his paintings can be found in many German museums.
