Spectacular Great Triptych in Southern Dutch Gothic style from the 16th century, signed and dated Iacob Renpoldt 1587
Oil on panel, closed triptych measurements: 140 x 96 x 10 cm, open measurements: 140 x 196 x 10 cm, with the exteriors of the two central doors representing Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata and Saint Dominic Abbot with the Serpent the right. Inside, a Bishop centers the ensemble dressed in rich silk robes, a sight studded with precious stones and a spectacular crosier in silver gilt with pearls, to his right the Major Abbot of the order with a Benedictine monk, and, in inside each side door, two Saints of the Benedictine Order along with a noble coat of arms finishing the lower left corner. Possibly devotional commission from a Monastery of the Benedictine Order in the Catholic Area of Flanders possibly Liège or Brussels. Provenance: former private collection of a collector and renowned Barcelona doctor, Barcelona. Settlement of inheritance, private collection.
