VERY NICE PAINTING "MME À LA PEINTURE" by Edmé Emile LABORNE (1837-1913) Pastel on paper, signed lower right, framed under glass. Size: 62.5 x 35 cm (view) A former student at the Lycée Henri-IV in Paris, Edmé-Émile Laborne wrote a thesis for his law degree in 1859, entitled Du louage d'ouvrage et d'industrie. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under marine painter Jules Noël and painter Eugène Lacoste. He exhibited at the Salon from 1865 to 1890. A painter of urban views and landscapes, his favorite subjects were the Normandy coast and the Loire Valley. His beach and harbor landscapes are similar to those of Eugène Boudin. The posthumous sale of his studio took place at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris on December 19, 1927. On this occasion, the Journal des débats politiques et littéraires wrote on December 15, 1927: "[...] a consummate colorist, he added to a real accuracy of vision a real gift for rendering the various effects of light. In his compositions of dense ensembles, there is not a detail, or even a point of scenery, that escapes him, and he excels, moreover, in rendering every movement, attitude and physiognomy5[...]".
