Tibetan Buddha, XVIII-XIX centuries. "Avalokitesvara". Patinated bronze. It shows marks of use and wear. Measurements: 23 x 14 x 10 cm. In Buddhist iconography, Avalokitesvara can be represented with multiple arms (as in this figure) or with multiplicity of heads, to symbolize his capacity to help many beings simultaneously. Avalokite?vara represents one of the noblest qualities of Mah?y?na Buddhism: universal and unconditional compassion. His image and his message of helping and active listening have inspired generations of Buddhists to cultivate a compassionate attitude towards all living beings, seeking to alleviate suffering in the world and promote peace and harmony.
