Processional cross. Castile, Catholic Monarchs, ca. 1500.
Bronze.
Measurements: 13 x 12 cm (Christ); 49 x 43 cm (cross).
Processional crucifix, made at the end of the 15th century, during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. It is a bronze piece, worked by casting, including the figure of Christ on the front and the Virgin and Child on the back in a half-bulk, with details made by means of engraving and flat chiselling. As for the typology of the cross, it follows the models typical of the western Mediterranean in the Gothic period, with arms topped with fleur-de-lis, with fleurons (acorns in this case), which emerge in the shape of a cross. These vegetal elements were in constant use in the Gothic period.
