As the son of sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer, Walter Launt Palmer received an early exposure to art. In 1870 Palmer began taking lessons from Frederic Edwin Church, and in 1872, when he was only 18, Palmer’s work was accepted by the National Academy of Design for an exhibition. Palmer studied in Paris until 1876. It was during his time in Paris that Palmer’s work became influenced by Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran.
