NASA. Historic launch of the APOLLO 4 rocket on November 9, 1967. This was the launch of the most powerful rocket ever to be operational, and the first space mission of the APOLLO program. The giant 3,000-ton launcher was designed to carry the spacecraft that would deliver a crew to the surface of the Moon by the end of the decade, to meet the goals set by U.S. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
