Astronaut Bruce Mc Candless uses his hands to control his movements in space while operating the nitrogen-powered maneuvering unit (MMU). McCandless floats without the tethers connecting him to the shuttle. McCandless pulls away from the space shuttle and is about to come within 300 meters of it. February 1984.
