Carles Nadal Farreras (Paris, France, 1917-Sitges, Barcelona, 1998)
Portrait of José Antonio Primo de Rivera in campaign uniform.
Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1940. After his participation in the Civil War (1936-1939) on the Republican side, his internment in the refugee camp of St. Cyprien and his return to Barcelona, Carlos Nadal was the object of "special monitoring" by the national authorities. As proof of this, some notes from his personal diary of 1943:
"Wednesday, January 13, 1943.
This evening the Governor came to the School recognized me and looked at me intelligently - Tomorrow Manolo will resolve my matter..."
"Wednesday, January 20, 1943.
I am annoyed I was in the Governor's Office and I could not talk to Correa and I do not plan to return. The matter I have pending with him will be solved by him if he is interested...".
In this context we must place this painting dated 1940, a portrait or post mortem recreation of José Antonio Primo de Rivera y Saenz de Heredia (1903-1936), first-born son of the dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera (1870-1930), in campaign uniform.
We are grateful for the collaboration of Alejandro Nadal, son of the painter Carles Nadal Farreras, in the cataloguing of this work.
92 x 73 cm. It has slight tears. It has slight flaws in the polychrome.
