BEHAM (1500-1550), St John, plate 4 from The Twelve Apostles, around 1545, Copper engraving Hans Sebald Beham (1500 Nuremberg - 1550 Frankfurt on the Main): St John, plate 4 from The Twelve Apostles With the serpent in the chalice, miniature depiction, c. 1545, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Inscription: Middle left monogrammed (ligated): "HSB". Upper right inscribed in the printing plate: "S. IOHANNES". Date: c. 1545 Description: The depiction shows the iconographic figure of a saint, recognisable by the aura around the head. The chalice with the snake identifies the saint as St John the Apostle. A scene with architectural elements can be seen at the back of the depiction.
