Unknown (19th), Young donor with church model, around 1880, Pencil
Unknown (19th century): Young donor with church model with architecturally designed frame, c. 1880, Pencil
Technique:
Washed Pencil on Paper
Date:
c. 1880
Description:
Half-length portrait en face of a young woman in the costume of an order of nuns. In her hands she carries a model of a detailed but unidentified church. The final transom with tracery windows and stepped gable as well as the octagonal tower are reminiscent of the early Gothic period in the broadly defined artistic landscape of the Middle Rhine and Hesse. The long, unadorned choir indicates a monastery or collegiate church, perhaps also a mendicant order. The fictitious frame around the young nun is decorated with neo-Gothic ornamentation and architectural embellishments.
